Public education in Smith County is provided as required under Mississippi law through the Smith County School District. The district is comprised of three schools located across the county and one vocational technology center. The district also provides the opportunity for eligible seniors to earn college credit through Jones College.
The school district is comprised of a appointed Superintendent of Education, and a five-member board that is elected by the county. The District is charged with providing exemplary education opportunities in accordance with the laws of the State of Mississippi at a justifiable cost to the taxpayer. Students attend schools in Mize, Raleigh, and Taylorsville based on geographic location within the county. Exceptions can be made through court order or school board officials.
